Touring Tokyo

After we watched the Kanto Festival in Akita, we decided to take a trip to Tokyo, the country’s capital. It was one of the most culture-shocking experiences of my lifetime and I am so thankful for having the opportunity to explore the digital wonderland.

One of my brother’s good friends, Naoki, took us on a tour of Tokyo from a local’s perspective. The first stop was in the city’s fashion district, Shibuya. Here we experienced some of the most unique street style looks I have ever laid my eyes upon. We passed over the famous Shibuya crossing, one of the most famous intersections in the world that has over 20 exits. The flashing billboards and vibrant lights made me feel as if I was transported back to Times Square in New York.
We caught a break from the bustling city by venturing into the Meiji Shrine of Yoyogikamizonocho. The Shinto shrine made you feel as if you were enclosed in a jungle and allowed you to slow down and pay respects to thousand-year-old beliefs and traditions.

After we worked up our appetites, Naoki showed us a secluded lunch spot that locals kept hidden from tourists. Located amongst the back alleyways, the restaurant is famous for their traditional ramen, which did not disappoint at all.
One experience that I will never forget is spending a few days at Tokyo Disney. As we explored the park and its numerous attractions, we passed countless popcorn carts, all which seemed normal…until you looked at the sign. From curry flavored to honey tossed and even soy sauce and butter coated, the theme park had plenty of unique options to choose from to get you to step outside of your comfort zone.
The land of the rising sun was one of the most magical experiences of my life.
I am eternally grateful for my brother and Naoki for showing us daily life on what seemed like a different universe.
