The Curse of the Red Tide

If you’re looking for a calm spot to relax after an exhausting week at the amusement parks, Disney’s Vero Beach Resort is the spot for you.

I recently propped my feet up at the luxurious resort, however, there were some unforeseen events that occurred.

When we pulled up to the guard booth, jumping out of our skin to explore the oasis, the worker informed us that the red tide just rolled in and could last up to 15 days. We didn’t know what the red tide was at first but quickly discovered the curse behind the name.

Once we stepped out of the car, we could not stop coughing until we entered the lobby. The reception desk notified us that the red tide is algae that traps the oxygen from escaping the ocean, killing marine life and affecting human’s respiratory systems.

The cause of the phenomenon is due to the mass population of algae; however, it is thought that humans may play a role as well. It was the first time in about 30 years that Vero Beach was hit by the tragedy at this magnitude.

In response to the outbreak, the Disney property decided to temporarily close the beach access and provided face masks if you wanted to step outside and relax by the pool.

Throughout our stay, we could only stay outside for about 30 minutes before taking refuge inside to escape the toxic air. However, Disney made you feel as if you were not missing out on anything outside due to their numerous activities inside. From painting glasses to scavenger hunts and even a clambake, the resort was truly able to cater to the unforeseen catastrophe but act unfazed.

One of the most memorable moments from the vacation was a kayaking excursion on a nearby lake. Since the lake was about 30 minutes from the ocean, the red tide did not affect the air heavily and you were able to breathe normally outside for hours. It was tranquil and rejuvenated the soul by allowing you to slow down and appreciate the natural beauty around you.

I am eagerly anticipating my return to Disney’s luxurious beach resort. Hopefully, with my next visit to Vero Beach, the tide decides to be on my side.
